    Summary

    Children with Hodgkin disease treated with radiation therapy face a high risk of thyroid hypofunction. However, long-term follow-up suggests these thyroid abnormalities may not always be permanent.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the incidence and nature of thyroid dysfunction in pediatric Hodgkin disease patients.
    • To evaluate the relationship between treatment modalities and thyroid function abnormalities.

    Main Methods:

    • Serial thyroid function tests were performed on 28 children diagnosed with Hodgkin disease between 1971 and 1978.
    • Patients received chemotherapy only, radiation alone, or combined radiation and chemotherapy.
    • Thyroid function was monitored over time to assess recovery or persistence of abnormalities.

    • 88% of patients receiving high-dose radiation developed thyroid hypofunction, compared to none receiving chemotherapy alone (P < 0.001).
