    Summary

    Cold stress in rats induced hypothermia, causing gut villi cell sloughing. However, intestinal cell DNA synthesis and enzyme activity remained unimpaired, suggesting hypothermia alone may not cause severe gut damage.

    Background:

    • Hypothermia, or decreased body temperature, can affect gastrointestinal function.
    • Previous studies suggested severe cellular alterations in the gut during hypothermia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the direct effects of acute hypothermia on the rat intestine.
    • To determine if decreased body temperature alone causes significant intestinal mucosal damage.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats were exposed to cold stress (4°C) to induce hypothermia (SE group).
    • Control groups (SC, UC) remained at room temperature.
    • Gut luminal washings and intestinal mucosal cells were analyzed for DNA content and 3H-thymidine incorporation.

    Main Results:

    • Hypothermia induced cell sloughing from intestinal villi into the gut lumen, evidenced by increased luminal DNA.
    • 3H-thymidine incorporation into intestinal mucosal cell DNA was unimpaired.
    • Intestinal disaccharidases and alkaline phosphatase levels were not altered by hypothermia.

    Conclusions:

    • Acute hypothermia causes intestinal villi cell sloughing but does not impair DNA synthesis in mucosal cells.
    • The findings suggest that severe intestinal alterations previously reported in hypothermia may be due to associated factors, not solely decreased body temperature.
