    Background:

    • Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is linked to decreased fetal growth and lower birthweight.
    • The source of alcohol may influence fetal growth, with beer suggested to have a greater impact.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between maternal beer consumption and maternal and fetal serum thiocyanate (SCN) levels.
    • To explore if SCN mediates the relationship between beer intake and fetal growth.
    • To examine the impact of other alcoholic beverages on SCN levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Maternal and fetal serum SCN levels were measured in 82 pregnancies.
    • Statistical analysis controlled for maternal characteristics, gestational age, and use of tobacco and marijuana.
    • Correlation between beer consumption quantity and fetal serum SCN was assessed.

    Main Results:

    • A significant positive correlation was found between the quantity of beer consumed and fetal serum SCN levels (p < 0.005).
    • Consumption of wine and liquor was not significantly associated with elevated fetal serum SCN.
    • The association remained significant after controlling for confounding factors.

    Conclusions:

    • Beer consumption during pregnancy is positively correlated with increased fetal serum thiocyanate (SCN) levels.
    • Elevated SCN may be a mechanism linking beer consumption to diminished fetal growth.
    • Further research is needed to confirm SCN as a mediator and to explore the effects of other alcohol types.
