    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular imaging
    • Medical physics
    • Computational cardiology

    Background:

    • Two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) is a key imaging modality in cardiology.
    • Analyzing contrast dynamics in echocardiographic videos can provide functional information.
    • Current methods for contrast analysis in 2DE may have limitations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and validate a computer program for analyzing videodensity changes in 2DE.
    • To assess the characteristics of videodensity curves generated by contrast injections.
    • To explore the potential clinical applications of this novel analysis technique.

    Main Methods:

    • A computer program was developed to analyze videodensity changes within operator-defined regions of interest.
    • Videodensity curves were generated from 2DE recordings of 32 dextrose injections in 14 patients.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Contrast appearance and washout dynamics were quantified over time.
  • Main Results:

    • Videodensity curves exhibited characteristics similar to indicator-dilution curves.
    • The decay phase of the videodensity curves was predominantly mono-exponential.
    • The technique demonstrated feasibility for analyzing contrast dynamics in the left ventricle.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed computer program offers a novel method for analyzing contrast dynamics in 2DE.
    • The videodensity curves show promise for quantitative assessment of cardiac function.
    • Potential applications include ejection fraction, cardiac output, and shunt quantification.
