    Summary

    Vaginal immunization with Escherichia coli O6 reduced urinary tract infection susceptibility in rats. Immunized rats showed decreased bacterial adherence, less bladder damage, and faster infection clearance, suggesting a new prophylactic approach.

    Background:

    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common, often caused by Escherichia coli.
    • Current treatments can lead to antibiotic resistance.
    • Preventive strategies for UTIs are needed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of intra-vaginal immunization against Escherichia coli O6-induced UTIs in rats.
    • To assess the impact of this immunization on bacterial adherence and urothelial integrity.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats were immunized intra-vaginally with E. coli O6.
    • Bacterial adherence to bladder epithelium was measured.
    • Scanning electron microscopy examined urothelial changes.
    • Infection clearance rates were determined in kidneys and bladder.

    • Vaginal immunization significantly decreased viable E. coli O6 adherence to bladder epithelium up to 8 weeks post-immunization.
