    Area of Science:

    • Medical Imaging
    • Diagnostic Sonography

    Background:

    • Limited existing literature on patient perceptions of sonography.
    • Sonography is a safe and accurate diagnostic modality.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate patient perceptions and misconceptions before and after sonographic examinations.
    • To identify knowledge gaps and areas for patient education.

    Main Methods:

    • Survey administered to 204 patients at Mount Sinai Hospital (January-June 1979).
    • Questionnaires collected pre- and post-sonography examination data.

    Main Results:

    • Many first-time patients were unaware of sonography expectations.
    • Patients reported misconceptions and incorrect preparation for the examination.
    • Lack of prior awareness of ultrasound was noted in some patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Significant need for patient education regarding sonography.
    • Physician education is also required to improve patient preparedness.
    • Enhanced understanding can reduce patient anxiety and encourage utilization of diagnostic ultrasound.
