    Summary

Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation in young patients presents uniquely, often with subtle pain but significant physical findings. Surgical intervention yields excellent outcomes for this condition in adolescents.

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Orthopedics
    • Neurosurgery
    • Spinal Disorders

    Background:

    • Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (LIHD) is less common in pediatric populations compared to adults.
    • Understanding the unique presentation of LIHD in adolescents is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize the clinical presentation and outcomes of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation in young patients.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of surgical treatment for pediatric and adolescent LIHD.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey of 37 patients aged 10–18 years diagnosed with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.
    • Analysis of local physical findings, straight-leg raising limitations, pain levels, and neurological deficits.
    • Review of surgical treatment outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • Physical findings and straight-leg raising limitations were often more pronounced in young patients than adults.
    • Pain was frequently mild or absent, and neurological deficits were normal in 40% of cases, usually minor when present.
    • Surgical treatment resulted in favorable outcomes in nearly all evaluated cases.

    Conclusions:

    • Herniated disc syndrome in children and adolescents has characteristic features that aid recognition.
    • Early diagnosis and surgical management are effective for pediatric and adolescent lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.
