    Summary

    Pituitary calcification is rare. This study documents persistent prolactin secretion from a calcified pituitary adenoma, showing normal menstrual function restored after surgery, but with recurrent symptoms needing long-term monitoring.

    Background:

    • Pituitary calcification is an uncommon condition.
    • Functional studies in patients with pituitary calcification are rarely reported.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with a severely calcified pituitary adenoma, referred to as a "pituitary stone."
    • Persistent prolactin secretion was observed both in vivo and in vitro.
    • Prolactin granules were identified within the calcified pituitary tissue.

    Findings:

    • Surgical removal of the "pituitary stone" normalized menstrual function and resolved galactorrhea.
    • Despite surgical success, the abnormal prolactin response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) persisted.
    • Galactorrhea recurred two years post-surgery, indicating the need for extended patient follow-up.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for persistent hormone secretion from calcified pituitary adenomas.
    • In vitro studies demonstrated the secretory capacity of human pituitary tissue in culture, offering a model for further research.
    • Prolonged monitoring is crucial for patients with prolactin-producing adenomas, even after apparent surgical remission.
