Aseptic arthritis after gonorrhoea.

L Rosenthal, B Olhagen, S Ek

    Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases
    |April 1, 1980
    PubMed
    Summary

Neisseria gonorrhoeae can cause aseptic arthritis, sometimes presenting as Reiter's syndrome. Immune responses, particularly lymphocyte stimulation, were heightened in patients with postgonococcal arthritis.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Rheumatology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Investigating the link between urogenital infections and reactive arthritis.
    • Comparing arthritis post-gonorrhea versus non-gonococcal urogenital infections.

    Observation:

    • Clinical presentation and sacroiliac arthritis signs were similar between groups.
    • Eye/skin lesions of Reiter's syndrome observed in both patient groups.
    • Gonococcal complement fixation positive in 9/16 postgonococcal arthritis patients.

    Findings:

    • Significantly greater lymphocyte stimulation by gonococcal antigen in postgonococcal arthritis patients compared to controls.
    • Elevated lymphocyte reactivity to gonococcal antigen in postgonococcal arthritis versus non-gonococcal arthritis patients.
    • No significant difference in lymphocyte reactivity between non-gonococcal arthritis patients and controls.

    Implications:

    • Supports the hypothesis that Neisseria gonorrhoeae can induce aseptic arthritis.
    • Suggests a specific immune response to gonococcal antigens in reactive arthritis.
    • Highlights the potential for gonococcal infections to trigger Reiter's syndrome.
