    Summary

Gold therapy is effective for psoriatic arthritis, contrary to some suggestions. A retrospective study found gold effective in most patients, with a low incidence of side effects similar to rheumatoid arthritis treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Immunology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Psoriatic arthropathy is a chronic inflammatory condition.
    • The efficacy of gold compounds in treating psoriatic arthropathy has been debated.
    • Previous suggestions indicated gold may not be an effective treatment option.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of gold therapy in patients with psoriatic arthropathy.
    • To challenge the notion that gold is ineffective for this condition.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective study was conducted.
    • Data from 98 patients diagnosed with psoriatic arthropathy were analyzed.
    • Treatment outcomes and side effects for patients receiving gold therapy were specifically examined.

    Main Results:

    • Gold therapy was administered to 27 patients.
    • Of those treated with gold, 22 patients (approximately 81%) showed positive treatment responses.
    • 14 patients (approximately 52% of those treated with gold) continue to receive gold therapy.
    • The incidence of adverse side effects was low and comparable to that observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

    Conclusions:

    • Gold therapy demonstrates significant efficacy in managing psoriatic arthropathy.
    • The safety profile of gold in psoriatic arthropathy patients is favorable and consistent with its use in rheumatoid arthritis.
    • This study supports the continued consideration of gold compounds as a treatment option for psoriatic arthropathy.
