[Principles of thyroid hormone treatment (author's transl)]
Abstract:
All diseases of the thyroid gland require treatment with thyroid hormone for two reasons: First to suppress secretion of TSH by the euthyroid struma, after strumectomy or radio-iodine therapy and as a concomitant medication in the administration of antithyroid substances. Secondly for substitution of thyroid hormone deficiency in hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, thyroidectomy, e.g. for malignant thyroid tumors. In some diseases, as in the treatment of thyroid carcinoma, suppression of TSH secretion and simultaneous substitution of the thyroid hormone deficit are essential.
