    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Status epilepticus is a neurological emergency often requiring prompt and effective treatment.
    • Conventional anticonvulsant therapies may fail in some refractory cases.

    Observation:

    • A single patient presented with status epilepticus refractory to standard anticonvulsant medications.
    • Rectal administration of sodium valproate syrup was employed as an alternative treatment strategy.

    Findings:

    • Complete seizure control was achieved in the patient following rectal administration of sodium valproate syrup.
    • The patient did not require assisted respiration, suggesting a potential benefit of this route.

    Implications:

    • Rectal valproate syrup presents a viable alternative for managing refractory status epilepticus.
    • This administration route may offer a non-invasive option, potentially avoiding the need for mechanical ventilation.
