    Background:

    • Native American populations exhibit a high prevalence of otitis media (OM).
    • Eustachian tube (ET) dysfunction is implicated in OM development.
    • Understanding ET function in this population is crucial for targeted interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the functional characteristics of the eustachian tube in White Mountain Apache Indians.
    • To compare ET function in Native Americans with OM to Caucasian populations.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized inflation-deflation tests to assess ET function in 25 Native American subjects with OM history.
    • Measured forced opening pressures, pressure equilibration via swallowing, and passive/active resistance.
