    Summary

Prognosis for absence seizures depends on several factors. Late onset, preceding or accompanying grand mal seizures, and psychological issues indicate a poorer outlook for seizure control.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Clinical Neuroscience

    Background:

    • Absence seizures are a common epilepsy syndrome in childhood.
    • Prognosis varies significantly among individuals.
    • Identifying factors influencing long-term outcomes is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate prognostic indicators in a cohort of absence seizure patients.
    • To identify clinical characteristics associated with treatment resistance.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 43 patients diagnosed with absence seizures.
    • Analysis of clinical data, seizure history, and treatment response.
    • Measurement of plasma drug levels in uncontrollable cases.

    Main Results:

    • Thirty-three out of 43 patients achieved seizure freedom for at least one year.
    • Ten patients had uncontrollable seizures.
    • Factors associated with poor prognosis included late onset (≥14 years), prior or concurrent generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and presence of automatisms.
    • Other indicators of poor prognosis included sleep-related or diffuse generalized tonic-clonic seizures, psychological disturbances, and progression to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

    Conclusions:

    • Late onset, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and automatisms are significant predictors of poor prognosis in absence epilepsy.
    • These factors appear interrelated and may indicate a more severe underlying epilepsy syndrome.
    • Early identification of these risk factors can guide treatment strategies and patient counseling.
