    Summary

    This study investigated human leukocyte antigen (HLA) frequencies in primary affective disorders. No significant associations were found after correcting for multiple comparisons, failing to confirm prior research.

    Background:

    • Primary affective disorders, including bipolar and unipolar types, have been investigated for associations with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) frequencies.
    • Previous studies suggested altered HLA antigen profiles in patients with these conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the frequencies of 27 HLA antigens (A, B, and C loci) in patients with primary affective disorders.
    • To compare these frequencies with a normal control group and assess potential associations.

    Main Methods:

    • Standard lymphocyte cytotoxicity testing was employed to analyze HLA antigens.
    • The study included 125 patients with primary affective disorders (77 bipolar, 24 unipolar, 24 schizo-affective) and a control group.

    Main Results:

    • Initial analysis revealed significant differences in HLA antigen frequencies (Bw40, Cw4, Cw3) between patient subgroups and controls.
    • However, these statistical significances were lost upon correction for the number of antigens tested (P values).

    Conclusions:

    • The study failed to confirm previous findings of significantly altered HLA antigen frequencies in patients with primary affective disorders.
    • The results suggest that HLA antigen profiles may not be strongly associated with these psychiatric conditions after rigorous statistical analysis.
