    Summary

Directly measuring maximal aerobic power (VO2 max) showed treadmill running yielded higher results than cycling. Treadmill VO2 max measurements are recommended for calibrating indirect fitness tests.

    Area of Science:

    • Exercise Physiology
    • Sports Science

    Background:

    • Maximal aerobic power, or VO2 max, is a key indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness.
    • Accurate measurement of VO2 max is crucial for exercise prescription and performance assessment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare direct VO2 max measurements obtained from treadmill running versus bicycle ergometry.
    • To assess the reliability and variability of treadmill-based VO2 max measurements.

    Main Methods:

    • Direct VO2 max was measured in 10 male subjects using a treadmill at 10 and 12 km/h and a bicycle ergometer.
    • Repeated measurements were conducted on five subjects to estimate variance.

    Main Results:

    • VO2 max values were not significantly different between the two treadmill speeds.
    • Bicycle ergometry yielded VO2 max values approximately 20% lower than treadmill running.
    • The 95% tolerance interval for treadmill VO2 max was +/- 7.8 ml.kg-1.min-1.

    Conclusions:

    • Treadmill running provides a more accurate direct measure of VO2 max compared to bicycle ergometry.
    • Treadmill-based VO2 max measurements are recommended for calibrating indirect testing methods.
    • The study raises questions about the direct method's utility and VO2 max as a sole measure of physical fitness.
