Rupture of the carotid artery from a hypopharyngeal foreign body

A 16-year-old boy ruptured his common carotid artery after ingestion of an open safety pin. This unusual occurrence is presented, along with a review of the literature and recommendations for proximal and distal ligation of the involved artery.
