    Summary

Esophageal cysts, though minor causes of dysphagia, are increasingly recognized. Congenital esophageal cysts, while rare, are easily removed and should be considered in dysphagia diagnosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Esophageal Pathology

    Background:

    • Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) can stem from various esophageal pathologies.
    • Esophageal cysts are generally considered a minor cause of dysphagia.
    • Intramural pseudodiverticulosis secondary to cystic esophagitis has seen increased observation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To highlight the significance of esophageal cysts as a cause of dysphagia.
    • To discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic considerations for esophageal cysts.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of pathological changes associated with dysphagia.
    • Analysis of observed cases of intramural pseudodiverticulosis and cystic esophagitis.
    • Consideration of congenital esophageal cyst diagnosis and management.

    Main Results:

    • Esophageal cysts are infrequently diagnosed preoperatively.
    • Surgical removal of esophageal cysts is technically straightforward.
    • Increased incidence of intramural pseudodiverticulosis linked to cystic esophagitis and stenosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Esophageal cysts, despite being a minor cause, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of dysphagia.
    • Congenital esophageal cysts, though rare, are manageable and their potential role in dysphagia should not be overlooked.
