    Summary

    This study assessed thyroid function in myasthenia gravis patients, finding significant rates of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Euthyroid patients with thyroid antibodies showed an elevated TSH response, indicating a potential risk for future hypothyroidism.

    Background:

    • Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder affecting neuromuscular junctions.
    • Thyroid dysfunction is frequently observed in patients with autoimmune diseases.
    • The relationship between MG and thyroid autoimmunity warrants further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate thyroid function in a cohort of myasthenia gravis patients.
    • To determine the prevalence of thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism, and subclinical thyroid disorders in MG patients.
    • To investigate the association between thyroid autoimmunity and thyroid function in euthyroid MG patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioimmunoassays were used to measure thyroid hormones (T3, T4) and binding globulin (TBG), along with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

    Conclusions:

    • A notable proportion of myasthenia gravis patients exhibit thyroid dysfunction, including overt and subclinical forms.
    • The presence of antithyroid antibodies in euthyroid MG patients is associated with an altered TSH response to TRH.
    • Euthyroid myasthenia gravis patients with thyroid antibodies may be at increased risk for developing hypothyroidism.
