    Summary

    Ouabain, a form of digitalis, significantly shortens the ventricular effective refractory period (VERP) in humans. This cardiac electrophysiology effect was observed during both atrial and ventricular pacing, impacting arrhythmia risk.

    Background:

    • Digitalis glycosides, like ouabain, are used to treat heart failure and arrhythmias.
    • Understanding their effects on cardiac refractoriness is crucial for safe and effective clinical use.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of intravenous ouabain on the ventricular effective refractory period (VERP) in humans.
    • To compare changes in VERP with alterations in the Q-T interval following ouabain administration.

    Main Methods:

    • 14 patients underwent electrophysiological study with atrial and ventricular pacing.
    • Ventricular extra-stimuli were used to determine VERP before and after ouabain (1.0-1.25 mg IV).
    • VERP and Q-T intervals were analyzed under different pacing conditions.
