Pregnancy in women with complete atrioventricular block (AVB) is usually normal, even if paced. Regular monitoring and delivery in specialized centers are recommended for a healthy mother and child.

Background:

Complete atrioventricular block (AVB) can affect women of childbearing age.
Permanent pacemakers are sometimes necessary for managing AVB.

Observation:

A series of 20 pregnancies in women with AVB (12) or pacemakers (8) was analyzed.
Most women were asymptomatic, but some experienced syncope during pregnancy.

Findings:

Atrioventricular block (AVB) generally remains functionally latent during pregnancy.
Programmable pacemakers are suitable for young women.
Nuclear pulse generators (Pu 238) showed no significant risks to mother or fetus.
Rejection of pulse generators during pregnancy is rare.
