    Summary

    Unilateral lesions in the substantia nigra of rats caused significant dopamine decreases in both brain sides. This suggests a contralateral influence of substantia nigra dopamine levels on the striatum.

    Background:

    • The substantia nigra (SN) is a key brain region involved in dopamine production.
    • Dopamine (DA) plays a crucial role in motor control and reward pathways.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of unilateral substantia nigra lesions on dopamine levels in rats.
    • To explore the relationship between ipsilateral and contralateral dopamine depletions.

    Main Methods:

    • Unilateral lesions were induced in the substantia nigra of rats using both electrolytic and 6-hydroxydopamine chemical methods.
    • Dopamine levels in the neostriatum and substantia nigra were measured 7 days post-lesion.

    Main Results:

    • A significant bilateral decrease in neostriatal dopamine levels was observed following unilateral SN lesions.
