    Summary

Pregnancy during infertility evaluation is often linked to infrequent intercourse before treatment. This study found low coital frequency, not psychophysiological changes, correlated with conception during initial infertility assessments.

    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Medicine
    • Human Reproduction
    • Infertility Research

    Background:

    • Infertility affects a significant number of couples seeking medical assistance.
    • Spontaneous pregnancies can occur during the diagnostic phase of infertility evaluations.
    • Understanding factors influencing conception during evaluation is crucial for patient counseling.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate factors associated with spontaneous pregnancy during initial infertility evaluations.
    • To compare characteristics of couples who conceived during evaluation versus those who did not.
    • To determine if psychophysiological factors play a role in conception during the evaluation period.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 299 patients evaluated for infertility between 1974 and 1976.
    • Comparison of 21 couples who conceived during evaluation with 223 fully evaluated infertile couples.
    • Analysis of sexual, psychiatric, menstrual history, coital frequency, and duration of infertility.

    Main Results:

    • Seven percent (7.2%) of couples conceived spontaneously during the initial infertility evaluation.
    • The pregnancy group exhibited significantly lower coital frequency (P < 0.01).
    • The mean duration of infertility was shorter in the pregnancy group (1.6 years vs. 2.9 years).

    Conclusions:

    • Spontaneous pregnancies during infertility evaluations are primarily associated with preceding low coital frequency.
    • Psychophysiological factors did not appear to be altered or influential in these spontaneous conceptions.
    • The findings suggest that infrequent intercourse may be a key factor for conception during the evaluation phase.
