    Summary

    This study found chronic salpingitis in 33% of ovarian endometriosis cases. This suggests salpingitis may contribute to infertility in endometriosis patients, potentially via altered tubal secretions.

    Background:

    • Endometriosis is a common gynecologic condition.
    • Pelvic endometriosis can be associated with infertility.
    • The relationship between endometriosis and fallopian tube pathology requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of chronic salpingitis in patients with ovarian endometriosis.
    • To explore the association between salpingitis, tubal obstruction, and tubo-ovarian adhesions in this patient group.

    Main Methods:

    • Histologic examination of fallopian tubes from 87 patients undergoing surgery for ovarian endometriosis.
    • Assessment for chronic salpingitis, tubal obstruction, and tubo-ovarian adhesions.

    Main Results:

    • Chronic salpingitis was identified in 33% of cases.
    • Tubal obstruction was rare, found in only one patient with salpingitis.
    • Tubo-ovarian adhesions were present in 17% of patients, with 7 of these also showing salpingitis.

    • A significant proportion of ovarian endometriosis cases exhibit chronic salpingitis.
    • Chronic salpingitis may be a contributing factor to infertility in endometriosis, potentially through effects on tubal function and secretion.
