    Background:

    • Lumbar disc disease is a common condition often diagnosed based on symptoms and signs.
    • Intradural tumors in the lumbosacral spine can present with symptoms similar to lumbar disc disease.
    • Accurate and timely diagnosis is essential for effective treatment and patient outcomes.

    Observation:

    • Twelve patients presenting with symptoms mimicking lumbar disc disease were diagnosed with intradural tumors in the lumbosacral region.
    • Nine patients had neurofibromas; two had prior laminectomies due to misdiagnosis of disc herniation.
    • Three patients had ependymomas; one underwent coccygectomy before correct diagnosis.

    Findings:

    • Myelography successfully diagnosed all intradural tumors.
    • Elevated cerebrospinal fluid protein levels (≥50 mg/100 ml) were observed in 80% of analyzed cases.
    • Radiographic abnormalities suggestive of neoplasia were only present in one ependymoma case.

    Implications:

    • Intradural tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis of suspected lumbar disc disease.
    • Myelography is a highly effective diagnostic tool for lumbosacral intradural tumors.
    • Surgical excision of these tumors generally leads to full recovery, highlighting the importance of accurate diagnosis.
