    International Journal of Oral Surgery
    |January 1, 1981

    Summary

Naso-palatine duct cysts present with palate swelling and are visible on X-rays. Diagnosis relies on clinical, radiographic, and microscopic findings, with removal only if specific features are present.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
    • Pathology
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Naso-palatine duct cysts (NPDCs) are the most common non-odontogenic cysts of the jaw.
    • They arise from remnants of the nasopalatine duct epithelium.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the clinical, radiographic, and histological features of naso-palatine duct cysts.
    • To outline differential diagnoses and indications for treatment.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of clinical cases presenting with NPDCs.
    • Analysis of radiographic (occlusal views) and histological findings.
    • Comparison with differential diagnoses such as dentigerous cysts and periapical lesions.

    Main Results:

    • NPDCs typically manifest as anterior palatal swelling, sometimes painful.
    • Radiographically, they are well-defined radiolucencies, particularly evident on occlusal views.
    • Histology shows variable epithelial linings, often with mucous glands, nerves, and blood vessels.

    Conclusions:

    • Diagnosis of NPDC is usually confident based on combined clinical, radiographic, and histological data.
    • Differential diagnosis primarily involves dentigerous cysts and periapical lesions of incisors.
    • Surgical removal is indicated only when specific clinical features warrant intervention.
