Home enteral nutrition via nasogastric infusion is a viable option for intestinally crippled patients. This therapy is recommended over intravenous methods for those who have not responded to enteral feeding.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Clinical Nutrition

    Background:

    • Limited contemporary literature exists on home enteral hyperalimentation, particularly for patients with intestinal failure.
    • Massive bowel resection often leads to severe malabsorption and the need for nutritional support.

    Observation:

    • Five patients received home enteral nutrition via continuous nasogastric infusion for a total of 78 months.
    • Patients primarily had undergone extensive bowel resection.

    Findings:

    • Home enteral nutrition using elemental diets is feasible for long-term management.
    • Compared to home intravenous hyperalimentation, enteral therapy offers potential advantages in feasibility, morbidity, cost, and psychological impact.

    Implications:

    • Home enteral nutrition should be considered a primary therapeutic option for intestinal failure.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Intravenous hyperalimentation should be reserved for patients who fail trials of enteral therapy.
