    Background:

    • Maturity Onset Diabetes Mellitus (MODM) is a form of diabetes.
    • Manic depressive illness (bipolar disorder) is often treated with lithium carbonate.

    Observation:

    • A female patient diagnosed with both bipolar disorder and MODM was treated with lithium carbonate.
    • The patient's blood glucose levels were monitored during lithium carbonate administration.

    Findings:

    • Lithium carbonate administration resulted in a significant decrease in blood glucose levels.
    • No other variables that could affect blood glucose were altered, isolating the effect to lithium.

    Implications:

    • Lithium carbonate may possess inherent antidiabetic properties.
    • Further research is warranted to explore lithium's potential as an antidiabetic agent.
