    Summary

    Chimpanzees and gorillas exhibit significantly elevated blood levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) compared to humans. These CEA levels remained stable over time and showed similarities to human CEA in immunologic reactivity and molecular size.

    Background:

    • Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a biomarker with established normal levels in humans (<2.5 ng/ml).

    • To measure and compare blood levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in various nonhuman primate species.
    • To investigate the stability and characteristics of CEA in primates with elevated levels.
