H O Eriksen, I Clemmensen, M S Hansen

Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation
    |May 1, 1982

    Summary

Plasma fibronectin levels are higher in males and increase with age in normal individuals. Blood stabilizers did not affect these fibronectin concentration findings.

    Area of Science:

    • Biochemistry
    • Clinical Chemistry
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Fibronectin is a crucial glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion and tissue repair.
    • Understanding fibronectin concentration variations is important for clinical diagnostics.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine normal plasma fibronectin concentrations across a wide age range.
    • To investigate the influence of sex and age on plasma fibronectin levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantitative electroimmunoassay was used to measure plasma fibronectin.
    • A cohort of 374 healthy subjects, from newborns to 85 years old, was analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Plasma fibronectin concentration was significantly higher in males than females.
    • A positive correlation was observed between fibronectin concentration and age.
    • No significant day-to-day or diurnal variations in fibronectin levels were detected.
    • The choice of blood stabilizers did not impact the measured fibronectin concentrations.

    Conclusions:

    • Plasma fibronectin levels exhibit distinct patterns related to sex and aging.
    • These findings establish reference ranges for fibronectin in a healthy population.
    • The study confirms the stability of fibronectin measurements irrespective of common blood stabilizers.
