    Area of Science:

    • Oral Surgery
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Critical Care Medicine

    Background:

    • Wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental procedure.
    • Complications, though rare, can be severe.
    • Early recognition and management are vital.

    Observation:

    • A 25-year-old student experienced severe complications after a routine lower wisdom tooth extraction.
    • Complications included submandibular abscess, septic shock, thrombocytopenia, acute renal insufficiency, adult respiratory distress syndrome, pneumothorax, and pericarditis.

    Findings:

    • Blood cultures revealed alpha-hemolytic Streptococci.
    • Abscess cultures identified Bacteroides fragilis.
    • The patient required intensive treatment, including positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) ventilation.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the potential for severe systemic infections following seemingly simple dental procedures.
    • Aggressive and multidisciplinary critical care is essential for managing such life-threatening events.
    • Highlights the importance of prompt diagnosis and management of odontogenic infections.
