    Summary

    Iodine deficiency increases the risk of developing autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTN). Iodine deficiency also contributes to the toxic evolution of these thyroid nodules, impacting hormone production.

    Background:

    • Autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTN) are a significant cause of hyperthyroidism.
    • Iodine intake is a known environmental factor influencing thyroid function and nodule development.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence, characteristics, and evolution of AFTN in iodine-deficient versus iodine-sufficient populations.
    • To determine the role of iodine deficiency in AFTN development and progression to toxicity.

    • Comparative study of AFTN prevalence in two distinct geographical areas of Sicily with differing iodine intake.
