Platelets in pregnancy: hyperdestruction in pregnancy.

Background:

Normal pregnancy is associated with various hematological changes.
Understanding these changes is crucial for maternal and fetal health monitoring.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate changes in platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW) during uncomplicated pregnancy.
To assess the implications of these changes on platelet consumption.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 2813 blood samples from 2066 women with uncomplicated pregnancies.
Platelet parameters (platelet count, MPV, PDW) were measured using a Coulter counter.

Main Results:

A significant decrease in platelet count was observed in the final 8 weeks of gestation.

A significant increase in MPV occurred in the last 4 weeks of pregnancy.

Platelet distribution width showed a constant and significant rise throughout pregnancy.

Conclusions:

Findings suggest increased platelet consumption (hyperdestruction) during normal pregnancy.
Platelet volume distribution width is a more sensitive marker for macrothrombocytosis in pregnancy.
