    Summary

This study establishes normal values for left atrial function using 2D echocardiography in healthy volunteers. These noninvasive measurements provide a reliable method for assessing left atrial function.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Echocardiography
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Left atrial function is crucial for overall cardiac performance.
    • Noninvasive methods are needed to accurately assess left atrial function.
    • Previous assessments relied on invasive contrast angiography.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine normal reference values for left atrial function noninvasively.
    • To validate 2D echocardiography as a method for assessing left atrial function.
    • To compare echocardiographic findings with contrast angiography results.

    Main Methods:

    • 52 healthy volunteers underwent 2D echocardiography.
    • A microprocessor-controlled system with a light pen was used for image analysis.
    • Orthogonal apical views were used to outline the left atrium and ventricle.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • A modified Simpson's rule calculated end-systolic and end-diastolic volumes.
  • Main Results:

    • Mean end-systolic left atrial volume was 37 ± 11.7 ml (21 ± 6.6 ml/m²).
    • Left atrial volume change was 24 ± 7.6 ml (13.5 ± 4.3 ml/m²), representing 37% of left ventricular stroke volume.
    • Mean left atrial fractional emptying was 65 ± 8.9%.

    Conclusions:

    • 2D echocardiography provides reliable, noninvasive measurements of left atrial function.
    • Established normal values can be used for clinical assessment.
    • Findings align with previously reported contrast angiography data.
