    Summary

    Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) B7 is more frequent in patients with primary lower extremity varicose veins. Certain HLA antigens, including Aw19, Cw5, and Cw6, were less common in these patients.

    Background:

    • Primary varicose veins of the lower extremities represent a significant clinical challenge.
    • The genetic underpinnings of varicose veins are not fully understood.
    • Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system plays a crucial role in immune responses and has been implicated in various diseases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between specific HLA antigens and primary varicose veins of the lower extremities.
    • To compare HLA antigen frequencies in patients with varicose veins to healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Two independent studies were conducted involving 138 patients with primary lower extremity varicose veins.
    • HLA typing was performed for 41 HLA antigens (A, B, C).
    • Frequencies of HLA antigens in patients were compared to those in control groups.

    Main Results:

    • A significantly higher frequency of HLA-B7 was observed in patients (36.2%) compared to controls (23.4%).
    • Lower frequencies of HLA-Aw19, Cw5, and Cw6 were found in patients with varicose veins.
