    Background:

    • Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare B-cell malignancy.
    • Hepatic involvement in HCL is frequently observed but not always clinically apparent.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To define hepatic changes in hairy cell leukemia.
    • To correlate liver morphology with clinical and biochemical findings.
    • To evaluate diagnostic methods for identifying HCL in liver biopsies.

    Main Methods:

    • Study of 19 patients with hairy cell leukemia.
    • Morphological examination of liver biopsy specimens.
    • Correlation of liver findings with clinical data and serum biochemistry.
    • Development and application of a new technique for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining.

    • All 19 patients showed microscopic mononuclear cell infiltration in the liver.
