    Summary

Computed tomography (CT) accurately identified a superior mediastinal mass as a parathyroid cyst. This is the first reported case of a mediastinal parathyroid cyst preoperatively diagnosed using CT.

    Area of Science:

    • Thoracic surgery
    • Endocrinology
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Mediastinal masses can present diagnostic challenges.
    • Parathyroid cysts are rare and typically located in the neck.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with a superior mediastinal mass.
    • Computed tomography (CT) was utilized for imaging.

    Findings:

    • CT accurately depicted the cystic nature of the mediastinal mass.
    • Surgical confirmation identified the mass as a parathyroid cyst.

    Implications:

    • CT is a valuable tool for preoperative characterization of mediastinal parathyroid cysts.
    • This case expands the known anatomical locations for parathyroid cysts.
