    Background:

    • Brainstem reflexes are implicated in phonatory control, but their role in humans remains poorly understood.
    • Auditory-laryngeal reflexes are hypothesized to influence voice production.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of auditory-laryngeal reflexes in human subjects during sustained phonation.
    • To examine the relationship between auditory stimulus intensity and reflex responses.

    Main Methods:

    • Fourteen subjects performed sustained phonation at constant pitch and intensity.
    • Auditory stimulation via clicks of varying intensities was applied.
    • Electromyography (EMG) of the cricothyroid muscle and fundamental frequency (FO) measurements were recorded.
    • Signal averaging was used to analyze short-latency changes in EMG and FO.

    Main Results:

    • Short-latency changes in fundamental frequency (FO) at 50 ms and cricothyroid muscle EMG at 11 ms were observed following auditory stimulation.
    • The magnitude of both EMG and FO responses correlated with stimulus intensity.
    • EMG responses did not exhibit habituation with repeated auditory stimulation.

    Conclusions:

    • Auditory-laryngeal reflexes are demonstrable in humans with short latencies.
    • These reflexes play a significant role in the neuromuscular control of phonation.
    • The findings provide insights into the neural mechanisms underlying vocal regulation.
