    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Microbiology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Campylobacter fetus is a microaerophilic bacterium that can cause serious infections.
    • Bacteremia with Campylobacter fetus is rare and its pathogenesis is not well understood.
    • Campylobacter jejuni, a related species, typically causes self-limiting gastrocolitis.

    Observation:

    • This report details five cases of Campylobacter fetus bacteremia.
    • Symptoms included high fever, gastroenteritis with colitis, or thrombophlebitis.
    • Less common septic sites observed were the meninges and endocardium.

    Findings:

    • Patients with underlying chronic diseases had a worse prognosis.
    • Non-debilitated patients generally had a more favorable outcome.
    • Antibiotic treatment is recommended for all cases of Campylobacter fetus bacteremia.

    Implications:

    • Early diagnosis and antibiotic intervention are crucial for improving patient outcomes.
    • Further research into the pathogenesis of Campylobacter fetus infections is warranted.
    • Understanding the distinct clinical presentations of C. fetus and C. jejuni is important for appropriate patient management.
