    Summary

This study introduces a new scale to measure delusional experiences across five dimensions. The findings suggest delusions are multidimensional, impacting clinical research and understanding of psychosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology
    • Clinical Neuroscience

    Background:

    • Delusions are a core symptom of psychosis, yet their structural properties remain incompletely understood.
    • Existing measures may not fully capture the complexity of delusional experiences.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and validate a scale measuring five key dimensions of delusional experience: conviction, extension, bizarreness, disorganization, and pressure.
    • To explore the underlying factor structure of these dimensions in patients with delusions.

    Main Methods:

    • Development of a novel scale assessing five dimensions of delusions.
    • Reliability analyses were conducted for each dimension.
    • Correlational analyses examined the interrelationships between dimensions.
    • Factor analysis was employed to identify underlying factors.

    Main Results:

    • The scale demonstrated adequate to excellent reliability for conviction, extension, disorganization, and pressure, but only fair reliability for bizarreness.
    • No high correlations were found between the five dimensions in 52 delusional patients, indicating their distinctiveness.
    • Factor analysis revealed two primary factors: delusional involvement and delusional construct.

    Conclusions:

    • Delusions represent a multidimensional phenomenon, not a monolithic construct.
    • The developed scale offers a valuable tool for measuring delusions in clinical research.
    • Findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the structure of psychotic experiences.
