    Summary

    This study found that 28% of asthma patients also had allergic rhinitis, and 17% of allergic rhinitis patients also had asthma. For those with both conditions, one often developed shortly after the other.

    Background:

    • Asthma and allergic rhinitis frequently coexist.
    • Understanding the prevalence and temporal relationship of these conditions is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the simultaneous prevalence of asthma and allergic rhinitis.
    • To investigate the order of onset between these two diseases in a general practice setting.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 7662 patients consulting for asthma and/or allergic rhinitis over one year.
    • Data collection on disease onset and co-occurrence.

    Main Results:

    • 28% of asthma patients also presented with allergic rhinitis.
    • 17% of allergic rhinitis patients also presented with asthma.
    • In patients with both conditions, 25% had simultaneous onset, 35% had asthma onset first, and 40% had allergic rhinitis onset first. Over 75% of patients with non-simultaneous onset experienced the second condition within two years of the first.

    Conclusions:

    • A significant proportion of patients with asthma or allergic rhinitis also have the other condition.
    • The onset of asthma and allergic rhinitis is often closely linked in time, suggesting shared underlying mechanisms or disease progression.
