Mesodermal induction defect as a possible cause of ear malformations.

A R Melnyk, L Weiss

The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology
    |March 1, 1983

    Summary

Congenital sensorineural deafness in two brothers was linked to inner ear anomalies and auricular malformations. This suggests a shared embryogenesis defect, possibly due to a recessive gene affecting mesodermal induction.

    Area of Science:

    • Genetics
    • Developmental Biology
    • Otolaryngology

    Background:

    • Inner ear anomalies causing deafness are rarely linked to auricle malformations.
    • The embryogenesis of this association is complex due to separate developmental origins of external and inner ear structures.
