    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Podiatric Surgery
    • Foot and Ankle Surgery

    Background:

    • Hallux valgus and related forefoot deformities are common.
    • Surgical correction often involves osteotomies to realign the metatarsals.
    • Minimally invasive techniques aim to reduce morbidity and recovery time.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of a specific distal oblique osteotomy technique.
    • To assess the functional recovery and patient satisfaction following the procedure.
    • To report complication rates associated with this surgical approach.

    Main Methods:

    • A distal oblique osteotomy of the first metatarsal was performed.
    • Lateral displacement of the metatarsophalangeal joint was achieved.
    • Internal fixation utilized a compression screw, with no external immobilization (splint or plaster).

    Main Results:

    • Forty-nine feet in 42 patients were operated on by eight surgeons.
    • Full weight-bearing was permitted at six weeks post-operation.
    • Return to unlimited work was also possible after six weeks.
    • Complications included superficial infection (1 case) and intra-articular screw placement (2 cases).
    • Overall patient satisfaction was high, with only one case of post-operative metatarsalgia.

    Conclusions:

    • Distal oblique osteotomy with internal fixation is a simple and effective procedure.
    • The technique allows for early weight-bearing and return to work with minimal complications.
    • High patient satisfaction suggests good functional outcomes for this surgical intervention.
