    Summary

    Diatom valves were detected in all tissue and marrow samples from both drowned and non-drowned individuals. The study found no characteristic differences in diatom composition, making them unreliable for proving drowning as a cause of death.

    Background:

    • Diatoms are microscopic algae found in water.
    • Their presence in tissues is sometimes used as evidence in forensic investigations, particularly for drowning cases.
    • However, the reliability of diatom analysis in determining drowning requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and distribution of diatoms in various tissues and bone marrow of drowned and non-drowned individuals.
    • To determine if characteristic differences in diatom flora can be identified between these groups.
    • To assess the potential of diatoms as definitive indicators of drowning.

    Main Methods:

    • Samples of lung, kidney, and liver tissue, along with femur and columna marrow, were collected from four drowned and four non-drowned persons.
    • Microscopic examination was performed to identify and analyze the diatom content in all collected samples.

    Main Results:

    • Diatom valves were found in all investigated samples, irrespective of the cause of death.
    • No significant or characteristic differences were observed in the composition of the diatom 'flora' between the drowned and non-drowned groups.
    • The distribution and type of diatoms did not show a clear pattern distinguishing drowning victims.

    Conclusions:

    • The presence of diatoms in tissues and bone marrow is not exclusive to drowning incidents.
    • Characteristic differences in diatom composition between drowned and non-drowned individuals could not be established.
    • Diatom analysis alone is currently insufficient to definitively prove drowning as the cause of death in forensic investigations.
