P D Thompson, W M Carroll

Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry
    |March 1, 1983

    Summary

This study presents a case of hemimasticatory spasm, noting similarities to hemifacial spasm. Peripheral cranial neuropathy may also cause hemimasticatory spasm.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Clinical Electrophysiology

    Background:

    • Hemimasticatory spasm is a rare condition affecting the muscles of mastication.
    • Understanding its etiology is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment.

    Observation:

    • Presents a detailed clinical and electrophysiological analysis of a single hemimasticatory spasm case.
    • Highlights the characteristic symptoms and diagnostic findings.

    Findings:

    • Observed clinical and electrophysiological features closely resemble those of hemifacial spasm.
    • Suggests a potential shared pathophysiology, possibly involving peripheral cranial neuropathy.

    Implications:

    • The findings suggest that hemimasticatory spasm may share etiological factors with hemifacial spasm.
    • This could lead to revised diagnostic approaches and therapeutic strategies for masticatory muscle disorders.
