Why do apparently healthy people use antacid tablets?

D Y Graham, J L Smith, D J Patterson

    The American Journal of Gastroenterology
    |May 1, 1983

    Summary

Heavy antacid use in adults is often due to reflux esophagitis, not functional issues. Antacid tablets can provide effective symptom relief for these patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Proprietary antacids are a significant market, with many adults using them regularly.
    • Heavy antacid users (over 6 doses/week) constitute a small percentage of adults but account for most consumption.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the reasons behind heavy antacid use in seemingly healthy individuals.
    • To determine the underlying medical conditions in frequent antacid consumers.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluated 37 heavy antacid users, assessing duration of use and frequency.
    • Conducted a 1-month double-blind, randomized crossover trial comparing antacid tablets to placebo.
    • Utilized Bernstein tests and endoscopy for diagnosis.

    Main Results:

    • Reflux esophagitis was diagnosed in 84% of heavy antacid users.
    • Most participants correctly identified the active antacid tablets over placebo (p<0.0001).
    • Bernstein tests and endoscopy confirmed esophagitis in a majority of subjects.

    Conclusions:

    • Heavy antacid use in adult males is primarily linked to reflux esophagitis.
    • Antacid tablets offer effective symptomatic treatment for reflux esophagitis.
    • Patient history is often sufficient for evaluating heavy antacid tablet users.
