    Summary

    This study found normal vitamin E levels in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), also known as Werdnig-Hoffmann disease. Therefore, vitamin E therapy is not recommended for individuals with SMA.

    Background:

    • Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, now known as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), has been previously associated with vitamin E deficiency.
    • Assessing vitamin E nutritional status is crucial for understanding SMA pathophysiology and potential therapeutic interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate and confirm prior reports suggesting vitamin E deficiency in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
    • To evaluate the vitamin E nutritional status in both pediatric and adult populations diagnosed with SMA.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum vitamin E levels were measured in 11 children and 6 adults diagnosed with SMA.
    • The ratio of serum vitamin E to total serum lipids was also analyzed to assess nutritional status.
    • Data were compared between age groups (under 12 and over 12 years old).

    • All assessed patients with SMA exhibited normal serum vitamin E levels.
