    Summary

    Adrenal androgen production declines with aging. Contrary to assumptions, adrenal zona reticularis width did not correlate with this decline, suggesting other factors influence androgen levels in aging humans.

    Background:

    • Adrenal androgens increase during puberty and decrease with aging.
    • The zona reticularis is widely assumed to be the primary source of adrenal androgens.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between adrenal zona reticularis width and declining adrenal androgen levels during human aging.
    • To challenge the long-held assumption about the zona reticularis as the sole source of adrenal androgens.

    Main Methods:

    • Single-blind analysis of zona reticularis width in adrenal sections from 42 individuals aged 4 months to 93 years.
    • Correlation analysis between zona reticularis width and age-related changes in adrenal androgen levels and excretion.

    Main Results:

    • No significant correlation was found between zona reticularis width and the decrease in adrenal androgen levels during aging.
    • The study observed a wide range of ages, from infancy to old age.

    Conclusions:
