    Summary

    Recurrent acute idiopathic facial palsy (AIFP) affects 10.9% of patients. Recovery rates are similar for both initial and recurrent facial palsy cases, regardless of the affected side.

    Background:

    • Peripheral facial palsy, commonly known as Bell's palsy, affects facial nerve function.
    • Recurrence of idiopathic facial palsy is a significant clinical concern.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the characteristics and prognosis of recurrent acute idiopathic facial palsy (AIFP).
    • To compare recovery outcomes between primary and recurrent AIFP cases.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 447 peripheral facial palsy cases over 9 years.
    • Detailed investigation protocol applied to all patients with AIFP.
    • Outcome assessment for 346 patients with AIFP.

    Main Results:

    • 41 (10.9%) of 377 AIFP cases were recurrent.
    • No significant prognostic differences were observed between primary and recurrent AIFP.
    • Complete recovery rates were comparable for initial and recurrent palsies, irrespective of laterality.

    Conclusions:

    • Recurrent AIFP does not appear to have a worse prognosis than initial episodes.
    • Complete recovery is equally likely after recurrent facial palsy as after a first attack.
