Restaging laparotomy (RL) aids in assessing treatment response for advanced Hodgkin

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Surgical Oncology

    Background:

    • Hodgkin's Disease (HD) staging and treatment response assessment are critical.
    • Restaging laparotomy (RL) has been utilized to evaluate disease status post-treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of restaging laparotomy (RL) in assessing treatment response and recurrence in patients with Hodgkin's Disease (HD).

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 39 Hodgkin's Disease patients undergoing 47 restaging laparotomies.
    • RL indications included suspected residual disease post-treatment, suspected recurrence, and confirmation of clinical response.

    Main Results:

    • RL identified residual or recurrent HD in 4 out of 13 patients post-treatment, 15 out of 21 with suspected recurrence, and 1 out of 3 for response confirmation.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Negative RL findings correlated with prolonged disease-free survival (median 63 months).
  • Treatment was altered in all patients with positive RL findings for recurrence.
  • Conclusions:

    • Restaging laparotomy is a valuable tool for evaluating treatment response and detecting intra-abdominal disease in advanced Hodgkin's Disease.
    • A negative RL result is associated with favorable long-term outcomes and sustained disease-free survival.
